The following is an account of what I witnessed in room no. 201B on 12 September2009.
Arriving on the due place(although a little late) I found a projector placed at one corner of the room, some laptops running on battery, geeks sitting all over the room and a speaker standing right in front of the greenboard to give away his talk on Setting up a DNS Server. This highly technical topic for me was no longer out of my reach after the end of speak.
As electricity supply played its game, the talks with presentations were scheduled for the latter part of the session while a speaker rose up to introduce the gathering with the terms and idea of Ethical Hacking. Now PING for me is not just a ringing sound but Packet INternet Gropher used to check the connectivity of the server.
Next package was an Introduction to PHP Coding.Unlike its title it was far more than that.Introduction was only of the speaker while this sever side scripting language was explored to its best. The next speaker was ready to share his knowledge on Routing Protocols.
While all this geeky stuff was goin on,electricity favoured us again and the talks with presentations, which were earlier put on hold, were now ready to be delivered. While the slides made us acquainted with the commands and usages of Shell Scripting, the two speakers took their turns in explaing the details of it.A practical on Ethical hacking and an instance of phishing were the last of all.Lack of time devoid us with some more talks.
But there was a surprise package for all(atleast for me).A quiz at the end of the session was completely a mind-boggling one fetching many of us openSolaris and Netbeans DVDs from Sun Microsystems .All the fun(only for geeks) was captured in a snap to remember for a lifetime.
This was it.This was how WE(students at Pantnagar) celebrated "Software Freedom Day".
